I’d like to think that Wilson is showing a bit of talent in the Kitchen. As TK and I are both from a food and hospitality background, we’re not sure it’s a good thing. But he loves nothing more than getting up on a step ladder and having a crack.

My nephew Baxter, (Wilsons cousin) has just discovered cooking using his DS lite.

The Royal Bacon Society

My day to day job, among other things, requires me to research and write little snippets about new products and food industry things from time to time for publishing on the web.

While I was chasing information about bacon, I came across this.

And from their Bacon store, I found this t shirt - they even have my size.

Oink - Oink!

What’s it all about?

I’ve spent more than half of my life working in the food business - trying to stay ahead, or, at least, with the trends of our food culture. I’ve observed the rise of mega, celebrity chefs and their tv shows and endless spewing out of cookbooks. Like fashion, food ideas and popularity change all the time. It’s a huge sausage machine.

Whilst it has provided a lifestyle and presented rewarding challenges over the years, just this week, I’ve come to wonder, what’s it all about?

Wilson has started trying new foods - new to him, and experimenting with textures and flavours. And this has started me thinking. Where does it end? When are we satisfied? Why isn’t the simplest thing enough?

Watching Wilson eat and enjoy a simple piece of watermelon or savoring the lingering, yeastie, salty flavour of vegemite has poked my curiosity into what it is that we call cuisine. Why do we like things?

This last week my memory had been jolted.

  • Pasta, cooked and tossed in butter.
  • Boiled egg and toast soldiers
  • Steamed and mashed vegetables
  • Toast and butter
  • The mouth feel of fresh, sliced bread
  • The rubbery, creaminess of sliced cheese
  • Bolognese
  • Vegemite
  • Weet bix

Simple.

404 error - file not found

WTF? Don’t make me ring the help desk!

The standard response code for a file that does not exist or has been moved is called a 404 error in HTML. Not everybody understands it and it doesn’t pop up as much as it used to but at least you know than when the message comes up, what you’re looking for just isn’t going to come up.

So what’s with the bloody screaming then? I’ve burped him, I’ve changed the nappy, I’ve checked the nappy again and nothing. He cant be hungry - he’s just been fed. So what’s the problem? There’s nothing there.

In this technological age, something missed the boat when they were handing out DOS operating systems. The new generation must have got lost back in the Y2K farce. “I’m typing the URL but nothing is coming back”. What happened to upgrading platforms when it comes to newborns.

The model I have doesn’t respond to hitting the reset button. There isn’t even an on / off switch. This model is completely wireless so I cant even take the plug out of the wall. Wireless broadband? nah - He doesnt even need a dodgy dial up to get his message across. The shriek through the darkness in the middle of the night crackles through the static of the baby monitor and cuts through the night like a Furi chefs knife.

CTRL/ALT/DEL - it works for everything else. Reboot? Maybe I should just bite the bullet and switch to MAC - nah - that would be like BBQing on a Weber.

Taking down “The Captain” with both barrels

Wilson went down last night. Went down like a sack of spuds. TK has started a new routine and upped the food volume and it worked. Last night was the best one yet. Two solid blocks of sleep, hardly any crying and a very happy and contented fellow. He’s on a feeding program for newborns from 1 - 8 weeks old and is starting a new routine today for babies over their birth weight and over 3 kg.

Last night was also our first outing. My cousin Jacky had a 40th and Wilson made his first public appearence. The best part about best feeding babes is they are extremely portable. Apart from a nappy bag and a capsule, everything is all wrapped up in a tidy “double barreled” package.
