adieu 2009 - 2010 is a whole new game at chez ESSR!

It’s hot in Melbourne. Last night the mercury struggled to dip below 26 degrees which, under normal circumstances, makes sleep difficult.
But it wasn’t the heat that kept me awake last night. It was an adrenalin fueled nervousness and the strong aroma of excitement that I haven’t felt since the few days before I got married. Not even the effect of a six pack of IPA could relieve last night’s “head miles”.
After a visit to the obstetrician yesterday afternoon the reality of what our new year will involve registered. It was like a thick slap to the back of the head.
2009 was a challenging year on the business front and at home, raising Wilson, was equally hard work. But the rewards are paying off and we are the proud parents of an amazing son. Our gift for the New Year will be another child and whole new set of challenges.
2010 – roll on and break out the cigars!

posted bystavI’d like to think that Wilson is showing a bit of talent in the Kitchen. As TK and I are both from a food and hospitality background, we’re not sure it’s a good thing. But he loves nothing more than getting up on a step ladder and having a crack.
Sorry about the break in transmission
posted bystavIt’s been a while. Sorry about that! The only excuse for not posting more often is because we’ve been so bloody busy.
My excuse? Yet another website to manage and maintain. This one was from a scratch start and has pretty much consumed the last 4 months.
TK has been working and still doing some personal training, which, considering her “delicate” state is no mean feat in itself.
Wilson has been developing which also keeps us from posting more regularly. We’ve also had the family over for the US.
As TK has eluded in the post below, Wilson fractured his leg recently as well. Not sure how it happened but it did. Didn’t stop him or slow him down though.
There’s a heap of photos and stories to tell but right now I have to tend to my farrow. Be right back!

$50.00 won’t pay for an education but it might be a box of beer.

posted bystavI’ve spent more than half of my life working in the food business - trying to stay ahead, or, at least, with the trends of our food culture. I’ve observed the rise of mega, celebrity chefs and their tv shows and endless spewing out of cookbooks. Like fashion, food ideas and popularity change all the time. It’s a huge sausage machine.
Whilst it has provided a lifestyle and presented rewarding challenges over the years, just this week, I’ve come to wonder, what’s it all about?
Wilson has started trying new foods - new to him, and experimenting with textures and flavours. And this has started me thinking. Where does it end? When are we satisfied? Why isn’t the simplest thing enough?
Watching Wilson eat and enjoy a simple piece of watermelon or savoring the lingering, yeastie, salty flavour of vegemite has poked my curiosity into what it is that we call cuisine. Why do we like things?
This last week my memory had been jolted.
- Pasta, cooked and tossed in butter.
- Boiled egg and toast soldiers
- Steamed and mashed vegetables
- Toast and butter
- The mouth feel of fresh, sliced bread
- The rubbery, creaminess of sliced cheese
- Bolognese
- Vegemite
- Weet bix
Simple.
